If I am asked what is the best way to lose weight safely, I always advise the person in the same way — eat less, exercise more and aim for loss of no more than 2 lbs a week. Doesn’t this seem obvious? Nevertheless it always surprises me how few folk understand this idea. Overeating made you gain weight so eating less will help you to reverse it.

It is important to recall that you did not put your excess weight on overnight, and you will not lose weight overnight either. Even if you could it would be unhealthy to lose weight at such a speed.

A good rule is to never lose more than 1% body weight each week. This was told to me by an excellent personal trainer I once had. This means that if you weight 180 lbs you should not lose more than 1.8 lbs each week on average.

So if you want to know the best ways to lose weight safely find a sensible healthy diet and eat no less than 1,400 to 1,600 calories a day. If you keep the healthy food pyramid in mind this will help you to keep a good balance of the major food groups. This way you will stay health and not become malnourished.

Portion control is an important part of weight loss. By eating less at each mealtime you will take in fewer calories allowing you to lose weight easily. It is also a good idea to try to eat up to 5 small meals each day instead of 3 large ones. This will keep you from slowing down your metabolism so you keep burning up those calories.

Another important aspect to to losing weight safely is movement- yes exercise! It is a god idea to increase exercise gently especially if you are very unfit. Maybe try a 20 to 30 minute walk 3 or 4 times a week then gradually build up to a daily walk. You will probably find that you enjoy it.

As well as you start a gentle strength training routine. This will help you to stay toned and prevent you from losing too much muscle along with the fat. This will ensure you look really good when you reach your weight goal.

You can easily lose weight safely if you follow this guideline. Use Don’t go crazy and try undoing the damage of a year in a couple of months. That way you will spend your life losing and gaining weight and each time it will be harder to lose.
